Deep roots in Utah

Russ’ Utah ancestry extends back four generations in Emery and Carbon Counties and five generations in Utah County. His grandfather Ted was born in Cleveland, Utah during the Great Depression. His grandfather Grant grew up in Pleasant Grove, Utah and joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War. His mother graduated from Utah Technical College (now UVU) and his father graduated from Brigham Young University (BYU).

Early Life

Russ’ father joined the Public Health Service after graduating from BYU to develop civil infrastructure on Indian reservations. Most of Russ’ childhood was spent on Navajo and Pueblo lands in New Mexico. Russ left Santa Fe, NM to attend BYU shortly after his 17th birthday.

Career and Education

Russ dropped out of BYU after the two semesters following his two years as a missionary in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. In 2007, he began a career as a contractor at IM Flash Technologies in Lehi, Utah. With shifting responsibilities, from technician to project manager to system engineer to sales account manager, Russ advanced his career after the 2008 recession with stints in Boise, Idaho; Sandy, Utah; and Malta, New York. He now lives in Draper, Utah with his wife and three young children (each born in a different state).

In 2018 Russ graduated with an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree from Salt Lake Community College and in 2020 he earns a Bachelor of Science degree in Writing Studies at the University of Utah. As a student of linguistics, Russ has varied fluencies (mostly limited) in Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French, ASL, Python, Java, Swift, SQL, and Calculus (even less in Arabic and Hindi).

Political Life

While he was elected as a delegate to the Utah Republican Party convention in 2008, Russ has been politically independent since 2003. Willing to question orthodoxy and interrogate ideology as a young adult, he has since self-identified as Republican, Democrat, libertarian, socialist, capitalist, progressive, and climate activist; each dialectical identity has contributed to a more complete, compassionate, centered, and courageous commitment to civil society.
